Type is Never Innocent  
Variable typeface, Publication/BA Thesis



Writing—one of the oldest social and cultural practices—has always been central to the creation, dissemination, and archiving of knowledge. Typography does not only establish a visual hierarchy, it always finds itself in a dialogue with society. 

In German-speaking regions, one historic example influences design practices to this day: the ideological instrumentalization of brokenscript typefaces in the context of a pre- and interwar Nazi-Germany. In my BA Thesis and variable typeface design, I ask: what can we learn from these forms; from these times?
